Ephesus

Ephesus is considered Greek but was built in 1000BC and was the centre of worship of Cybele the mother Goddess(see photo). The Ionions then arrived and worshiped Artemis the greek fertility goddess. Alexander the Great made it great but the Romans made it the main port of the Aegean until it silted up and it went into decline not before St Paul and the Virgin Mary had visited and tried to convert the silver smiths who ran him out of town.
